Salaam, and welcome to our December newsletter! See below for what we were up to this month and our upcoming events:
Beyond the Muslim Ban Briefing
Picture
We attended a panel discussion of immigration and civil rights activists on the effects of President Trump’s third Muslim travel ban, and how measures such as extreme vetting and the revocation of certain visa programs could further limit the number of Muslims entering the United States. In opening remarks, Rep. Chu (D-CA-27) called on advocates to continue opposing the ban and encourage their members of Congress to do the same.

Poligon also attended a discussion hosted by the Brennan Center on the Trump Administration’s proposed “extreme vetting” of immigrants and visitors to the United States. Panelists highlighted the pitfalls of trying to scan social media data to determine terrorism risks and warned of its potential effects on freedom of speech.
No Muslim Ban Ever Rally
Picture
Source: Darakshan Raja
We joined a rally of Muslims and allies gathered in front of the Supreme Court to protest its decision to let Muslim Ban 3.0 go into effect, and renew their support for families who will be affected by the ban. Rep. Chu (D-CA-27) and Rep. Kildee (D-MI-5) also called for the country's leaders to live up to its ideals of tolerance and diversity.
Rally Against the GOP Tax Plan

Salaam, and welcome to our September newsletter! See below for what we were up to this month as well as our upcoming events:
No Muslim Ban Ever Rally
Picture
Poligon co-sponsored a rally in response to President Trump's third attempt at an anti-Muslim travel ban. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY-10), Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA-4), and advocates from many partner organizations spoke out against the devastating impact of this new ban and the importance of advocating to elected officials to take action.
#NoMuslimBanEver Twitter town halls
Picture
As part of the ongoing No Muslim Ban Ever campaign, Poligon also participated in #NoMuslimBanEver Twitter town hall discussions on September 19 and 28.
Hill Briefings on The Color of Surveillance Under Section 702
Picture
Poligon attended briefings by the Arab American Institute and the Fourth Amendment Advisory Committee on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which is set to come up for Congressional reauthorization later this year. This legislation allows government agencies to monitor communications between U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, even if the foreign national is not suspected as a terror threat. Low-income, immigrant, and Muslim communities are particularly at risk for discriminatory targeting using the powers authorized in this law.
Hill Briefing on Urban and Rural Poverty
Picture
We also attended a briefing by the Salvation Army on the Human Needs Index, a unique way of measuring poverty in American communities using the organization's data the services it provides. The study showed that rural communities may have more basic needs than government data shows, because it is more difficult for them to access government services. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), who participated in a discussion of the findings, highlighted the importance of providing hope and opportunity to low-income communities and the role of both governments and non-profits in alleviating poverty.

In the News

In anticipation of a rally by the hate group ACT for America, the Huffington Post featured an op-ed by our president Wardah Khalid entitled Less than One Month After Charlottesville, Bigotry is Back, in which she discusses the influence of Islamophobic groups on the country's political discourse and what Congress can do to condemn bigotry and violence.

Picture
Poligon took part in a vigil at the White House alongside The New York Immigration Coalition, NAKASEC, and South Asian Americans Leading Together to defend DACA, TPS, and say #NoMuslimBanEver. 800,000 immigrant youth are at risk for deportation if President Trump rescinds DACA. Our team attended Pew Research Center’s event to share the findings of their new survey concerning American Muslim religious belief and practices, social values, views about extremism, political preferences and reactions to the early days of President Donald Trump's administration, and their experiences with discrimination. Key findings include:

  • 48% of Muslims say they have experienced at least one incident of discrimination in the past 12 months
  • Only 44% of U.S. Muslims say they voted in the 2016 election
  • One-in-four Muslims are citizens but are not registered to vote (25%). 13% of Muslim registered voters stayed home on Election Day.
Picture
Poligon attends a problematic hearing regarding  ‘Combating Homegrown Terrorism’
The House subcommittee on National Security held a hearing examining the U.S. government’s policy for “countering violent extremism (CVE)” within domestic communities. CVE is controversial because of its traditional focus on the Muslim community through a law enforcement lens. At the hearing, one witness, Ms. Raheel Raza, who previously spoke about “radical Islam” at the anti-Muslim group ACT for America’s conference, made unsubstantiated statements such as declaring the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization would decrease radicalization rates. Such claims increase fear and Islamophobia by the American public and lawmakers and threaten to take away our right to civically engage and politically participate in the U.S.

Ramadan Mubarak from the Poligon Team!

Ramadan Mubarak!
From all of us at Poligon Education Fund, we wish you a very happy Ramadan, filled with self reflection, service, and faith. It is easy to feel defeated these days, in the midst of heightened Islamophobia and chaos on the national and global level, but we hope Muslim Americans will join us this holy month in stepping back and reflecting on our values of peace, justice, and pluralism - as well as our ability to create real positive change in our country. As God tells us in the Quran, "Oh you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God." (Surah An-Nisa:135).

May this month be a time of spiritual blessing and rejuvenation for us all.

Warmly,
The Poligon Team

P.S. As Ramadan is a time of great generosity, will you make a $100 donation to support our work? All contributions are Zakat eligible and tax deductible.

Together, we can make America safer.

Poligon in the Community

Congressional Advocacy Workshop
Our first in-person workshop was held in Washington, D.C. Co-hosted with MUPPIES DC, it covered how policy is made in Congress, as well as best practices for Congressional visits and town halls. Participants left motivated and equipped with the tools needed to actively engage their representatives. If you are interested in bringing this workshop to your state please email us at [email protected].

#RiseUp Protest for Immigrant Rights:
Poligon participated in the Rise Up protests in D.C. in support for immigrant rights, along with hundreds of thousands across the country "to demonstrate the power, resilience and strength of immigrant communities in America." (www.indivisibleguide.com)

Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing
Poligon attended and live tweeted the Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing on the rise of Religious Hate Crimes. However, no Muslim individuals or organizations were included on the panel, despite the community being severely affected by religious hate crimes.

Muslim Ban Press Conference
We co-sponsored the Muslim Ban press conference outside Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond VA, where the travel ban hearing was held. The court later  denounced the ban and determined that it “speaks with vague words of national security, but in context drips with religious intolerance, animus, and discrimination” wrote U.S. Chief Circuit Judge Roger Gregory. #NoMuslimBanEver
