POLIGON STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT’S PARTIAL REINSTATEMENT OF REVISED MUSLIM TRAVEL BAN

6/26/2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 26th 2017
POLIGON STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT’S PARTIAL REINSTATEMENT OF REVISED MUSLIM TRAVEL BAN
Washington, D.C. - Poligon Education Fund is extremely concerned and disappointed with the U.S. Supreme Court’s announcement to allow some provisions of the Trump administration’s revised executive order barring Muslim and refugee travel to go into effect before hearing arguments later this Fall.

Board Member Nadia Mozaffar summarized the ruling: “although both the Ninth and Fourth Circuit Courts of Appeal found that the Muslim ban unconstitutionally discriminated against refugees and immigrants due to their religion, the reinstated ban (1) allows the administration to suspend refugee resettlement for four months (2) bans immigrants and travelers from six Muslim-majority countries from the United States for three months, if such immigrants and refugees cannot demonstrate they have a relationship with a person or an organization in the United States.”

Allowing the executive orders to take effect, even in limited form, unjustly ignores the Islamophobic origins of the policy and could encourage additional anti-Muslim policies from the Trump administration. It also puts Muslim Americans in jeopardy of being the victims of anti-Muslim hate crimes, which are already at an alarmingly high level. Furthermore, the announcement will cause unnecessary hardship and administrative headaches for individuals from the six Muslim-majority countries.

Congress must fulfill its oversight duties and step in to condemn and nullify this bigoted ban. As lower courts have previously stated, this policy is based on discrimination against the Muslim community’s religion, and not national security. It also clearly undermines our values as a nation to welcome people of all backgrounds, regardless of their religion or ethnic background.

We will continue to stand against this ban and are confident that when the Supreme Court does hear the case in the Fall, it will strike it down and put an end to this bigoted policy once and for all.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DC MUSLIMS COUNTER ANTI-ISLAM PROTESTS WITH FASTING 5K CHARITY RUN ON SATURDAY
70% of proceeds will be distributed to Poligon Education Fund to train Muslim youth on Congressional engagement
Washington, D.C. - On Saturday, June 10, the same day that “March Against Shariah” will be held across the country by ACT for America, D.C. Muslims will be running and walking at the end of a 17 hour long fast to empower their community members against such hate. About 70 people are expected to participate in the annual 5k. A majority of the proceeds will benefit Poligon Education Fund (Poligon), a non-profit, non-partisan organization launched in January to amplify the Muslim American voice in Congress.
Ramadan is a holy month celebrated annually by the Islamic faith, in which healthy Muslims will forgo food and water during the day and instead opt to use their time for spiritual reflection, charity, and general acts of goodness. Fasting5k utilizes this spirit in creating a network of communities that walk for the cause of charitable giving. Since its inception in 2013, Fasting 5k has raised a whopping $225,000 for local charities. This year, this influence spans Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco Bay area, Toronto and Washington D.C. The Toronto event was recognized by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday.
Given the tense political climate, supporting causes that strengthen community through civic engagement is more important than ever. Poligon will utilize the funds to deliver youth-specific Congressional advocacy workshops to engage their representatives on issues such as bullying and Islamophobia they face on a daily basis. In addition, Fasting5k will donate a portion of their earnings from each city to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) to support young women in their development into active citizens and community leaders.
Details: The event begins at 6:30 PM on Saturday, June 10th at the National Mall on 3rd St NW & Madison Dr NW National Mall, Washington, DC 20216

Poligon Education Fund Commends Hawaii Federal Court Decision to Halt Muslim Ban 2.0

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Poligon Education Fund Commends Hawaii Federal Court Decision to Halt Muslim Ban

Poligon Education Fund welcomes Judge Derrick K. Watson’s ruling today to issue a temporary restraining order on President Trump’s revised executive order. Once again, the judicial branch has sent a meaningful signal to the administration that the rule of law must prevail over discriminatory policies that unfairly target Muslim immigrants and refugees fleeing violence and torture, no matter how they are packaged.

While this is a temporary measure, we are pleased that the court has recognized the irreparable harm that would have been committed had the executive order gone into effect on Thursday, as originally planned. As it stated in its decision:

"The illogic of the Government's contentions is palpable. The notion that one can demonstrate animus toward any group of people only by targeting all of them at once is fundamentally flawed."

Poligon will continue to oppose this hateful and counterproductive proposal and urge our elected officials to do the same until we are able to strike down the Muslim Ban permanently.

Poligon Education Fund Stands Against Administration's Attempt at Muslim Ban 2.0

WASHINGTON, DC – Poligon Education Fund strongly condemns President Trump’s second attempt, via executive order, to ban Muslims from entering the United States. The guidelines - set to go into effect on March 16th, 2017 - are un-American, undermine U.S. national security, and will only increase Islamophobic sentiments across the nation.

While some changes were made - such as Iraqis being excluded from the ban, Syrian refugees no longer barred indefinitely, and the exception of green card and other visa holders - it remains at heart a Muslim ban. The revised order continues to ban men, women, and children from 6 majority-Muslim countries — Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Syria and Libya. Furthermore, the order fails to address the concerns of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals which explicitly rejected the Trump administration’s plea to reinstate the original ban on security grounds.

America’s national security is not threatened by Muslims entering the country. Rather, the Muslim community is a significant and undeniable asset to our country’s diversity, prosperity, and pride. This country is a global beacon of hope and opportunity because of its immigrants and refugees; not in spite of them.

We strongly urge members of Congress to immediately denounce these executive orders and to take whatever means necessary to prevent their implementation. Poligon Education Fund will also continue to oppose this hateful and counterproductive proposal and to demand that our elected officials and courts defend the Constitution and strike down this Muslim Ban.

Poligon Education Fund is a non profit, non-partisan charitable organization providing research and education on issues of concern to American Muslims and their allies.

Poligon Backs Rep. Beyer's Freedom of Religion Act

2/2/2017

Poligon Education Fund is a proud supporter of the Freedom of Religion Act introduced to the House of Representatives by Rep. Don Beyer (VA), along with lawmakers including Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC), Keith Ellison (MN), Joe Crowley (NY), Jan Schakowsky (IL), Betty McCollum (MN), André Carson (IN), and Pramila Jaypal (WA).

The Act was introduced in response to President Trump's Executive Order banning immigration from seven Muslim majority countries and Syrian refugees indefinitely (essentially a Muslim Ban). The legislation would halt the discriminatory act of
profiling "immigrants, refugees, and international visitors" entering the United States based on religion.

“Religious freedom is a defining value of the United States, guaranteed by the Founding Fathers in the First Amendment to the Constitution," Rep. Beyer said. "Today’s legislation won’t erase the pain from President Trump’s ban, but it will ensure that this sort of immoral action never happens again and show the world that America still honors its founding principles.”

MILLENNIAL MUSLIMS AIM TO SHAKE UP CONGRESS
Group launches non-profit Poligon to amplify Muslim voices on Capitol Hill

(WASHINGTON, DC) - A group of millennial Muslim leaders announce today the launch of Poligon Education Fund (Poligon), a national, non-partisan organization dedicated to increasing American Muslim participation on Capitol Hill.

Founded by Muslims with backgrounds in government advocacy, law, and research, Poligon seeks to unite Muslim and progressive voices to educate policymakers and make meaningful progress on pressing matters such as civil rights, Islamophobia, and the economy.

“While American Muslims made great strides in registering voters and getting to the polls for the recent Presidential election, more efforts are needed when it comes to engaging Congress,” president and co-founder Wardah Khalid said. “This is critical since Congress determines many of the laws and policies that affect the community, including those dealing with anti-Muslim discrimination, which has reached at an all-time high since 9/11.”

Consequences of Islamophobia include bullying in schools by both teachers and peers, public harassment of men and women perceived to be Muslim, and political discourse about banning and registering Muslims. Anti-shariah legislation, passed and pending in states around the country, is threatening to eliminate fundamental rights of the community to pray, fast, and give charity as prescribed by their faith.

Poligon’s goal is to help the 3.3 million Muslims who call America home build relationships with their Congressional representatives and increase political acumen through trainings, legislative updates, and policy guidance. It will also work with faith-based organizations and civil rights groups to ensure that the right to religious freedom protected by the U.S. Constitution is not denied to American Muslims.

In doing so, Poligon hopes to shape an America where all people, regardless of background, are treated with justice and dignity and can live together in peace and security.

Guided by values of peace, justice, and pluralism, Poligon Education Fund is a non-profit, non-partisan organization based in Washington, D.C.

Poligon commends Obama administration for ending NSEERS

12/22/2016

Poligon commends the Obama administration for deleting the published rules of the National Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS). The dormant program, which was originally created by President Bush in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, could have been utilized by President-elect Donald Trump to establish a registration database for Muslim immigrants residing in the U.S.

NSEERS was problematic because the 25 countries requiring automatic registration were largely Muslim. It had massive implications on the Muslim community inside the U.S., deportating 10,000 of their friends and family members and causing thousands of dollars in legal fees for families who chose to fight it. NSEERS was also ineffective, producing zero terrorism-related convictions in the 93,000 cases it created.

Now, if Trump intends to follow through with his abhorrent plan to register Muslims in a database, he will have to start from scratch. Poligon will continue working with Congress, the community, and our allies to ensure that it does not materialize.
