Here are four ideas for issues to address:
Here are four ideas for issues to address:
Stop Trump’s Islamophobic Cabinet Appointment: President Trump has nominated Mike Pompeo as his next Secretary of State. Pompeo is known to have close ties to Islamophobic groups and activists, and has accused Muslims of being “potentially complicit” in acts of terrorism. The Senate has the power to block this nomination - tell your Senators that Islamophobia has no place in the Cabinet. Muslim Bans: President Trump has continued to issue executive orders restricting visitors, immigrants, and refugees from many countries, especially those with large Muslim populations. While we wait for the Supreme Court to hear oral arguments on the bans on April 25th, you can encourage your elected officials to take a strong stand against these policies and support H.R. 4271 / S. 1979, which would block enforcement of the Muslim bans and recognize them as illegal. If you have relatives in one of the targeted countries, tell your elected officials how these bans keep you apart from them. The Farm Bill: Congress is stalled over the historically bipartisan Farm Bill, which covers funding for agriculture-related programs and federal nutrition assistance. This year’s version could include partisan, counterproductive time limits on access to SNAP (food stamps), including for recipients who may have undiagnosed disabilities. Tell your members of Congress to adequately support basic needs for our country’s most vulnerable families. Addressing Gun Violence: Two bipartisan bills have been filed in the wake of mass shootings: the Fix NICS Act would close a loophole allowing some perpetrators of domestic violence to obtain guns, and the STOP School Violence Act would provide schools with resources such as security improvements and violence prevention trainings for staff and students. Let your members of Congress know where you stand on these bills. |
