Black History Month 2019
This month we recognized Black Muslims who have made an impact in their community and in Congress. Go to our Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to check out who we highlighted each week!
Emgage USA Congressional Reception
Poligon attended Emgage USA's reception held at the National Press Club in D.C. where both Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-13) & Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL-26) discussed their goals and experiences in Congress. Congresswoman Tlaib talked about being unapologetically herself, while Rep. Mucarsel-Powell spoke about her promises to address the detainment of children and help repeal the Muslim Ban.
The Vigil of Mustafa Ayoubi with Representative Carson
Poligon attended the vigil for Mustafa Ayoubi, a Muslim killed in an alleged hate crime including Ayoubi's family, in front of the Supreme Court. Congressman André Carson (D-IN-7) and some faith leaders were also in attendance to speak upon Ayoubi's behalf and condemned the horrendous incident that occurred. Indiana is one of just five states that does not have a hate crime law. We will be following this case closely, so stay tuned to our mailing list and social media on opportunities to take action!
Meeting with Senator Lamar Alexander
Poligon's legislative fellow, Ruwa Romman, had the opportunity to meet with Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN-3) with members of the Domestic Human Needs (DHN) working group to discuss funding of housing vouchers that would help the poverty issue that still remains a prevalent issue in the U.S., particularly for communities of color.
Press Conference with Democratic Members of Congress
Poligon attended a press conference where the Democratic Members of Congress gathered around a sign stating to "Terminate Trump's Fake Emergency." House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-12) and Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-TX-20) introduced a privileged resolution to stop Trump's emergency declaration for a border wall. #NoBanWall
Action Alert
Congress adjourned Friday, February 15 to Sunday, February 24 for their Spring recess. Poligon specifically sent an action alert for spring recess for what you could do during that time. It was a great opportunity to directly tell them about the issues that are most important to you! Even if you couldn't call or visit them then, you should schedule your visits today! Click here to find out who represents you, how to contact them, and where their in-district offices are located.
