Salaam, and welcome to our August newsletter! See below for what we were up to this month as well as our upcoming events: Townhall on Charlottesville with Arab American Institute Board president Wardah Khalid attended a townhall meeting organized by AAI on the violent and tragic white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. Community members discussed their reflections after the rally and steps to move forward, including the importance of representation in politics, which Poligon aims to help facilitate. Facebook Live Chat on Congressional Response to Charlottesville Board members Ayesha Ali and Wardah Khalid conducted a Facebook live session to discuss how members of Congress responded to the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville and how our community could move forward. Watch the video here. #CounterAct Hate Letter to Mayors Poligon joined over 200 local and national groups to urge nearly 60 mayors, where rallies from anti-Muslim hate group ACT for America were scheduled, not to make their cities the next Charlottesville and "unequivocally condemn white supremacist and anti-Muslim hatred” in their communities. Fortunately, the rallies were cancelled but replaced with online demonstrations, which Poligon still opposes. Defend DACA/TPS & No Muslim Ban Ever Rally Poligon took part in a vigil at the White House alongside The New York Immigration Coalition, NAKASEC, and South Asian Americans Leading Together to defend DACA, TPS, and say #NoMuslimBanEver. 800,000 immigrant youth are at risk for deportation if President Trump rescinds DACA. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments regarding the Muslim travel ban in October.
